The Downside of Being Confined: Reduced Travel

September 2, 2020 by Ocean Palmer Leave a Comment

If you want to learn, travel.

If you want to learn a lot, travel to a foreign country.

If you want to learn a lot about yourself, travel alone to a foreign country where you do not speak the language.

As the world searches for its “new normal” in the aftershocks of the pandemic, an obvious early tragedy involves the implosion of the travel industry. I was luckier than most in this regard: Prior to my suitcases gathering dust for a living, they traveled the world. Each trip was its own life chapter. The more a man or woman hears, sees, smells, tastes, and touches, the broader his or her horizon spreads. Each journey had its own beginning, middle, and end; and each was a life chapter unto itself.

I hope when things settle back down, young people are able to get out and explore. They deserve it, as well as the eye-opening good that comes from exposure and immersion. The world is better when its people come together instead of splitting it apart.
